Separate from the obvious political statement that the book is making, in terms of plot, I still find the common theme of apocalypse and the retreat of human kind to a state far removed from any kind of humanity to be a terribly masculine idea, and a genre which always seems to become enamoured of its own brutal depths. Octavia Butler stands as the best contrast I think, as in Parable of the Sower. Not that brutality is absent from her world, but with the existence of people coming together to rescue, salvage and build something new.

The book is narrated by two main characters; the hunter and the prey, also know as; the poor and the rich. One could wonder, how is the poor one described as the hunter and the rich as the prey?! The answer is simple;the poor struggle to survive, the prey just waits for its death. The book begins with "The hunter" part, and the writing almost put me off completely. I have never in my life been disgusted with words as I was while first reading this book. But as I kept on reading, I understood the need to use such words, I understood the importance of language and why we all differs in using it.

The more I read, the more I felt their pain, sufferance, misery, disgust, their deep hatred toward each other and the "Utopians". The more I read, the more I understood this country. Tawfik's usage of contrast is remarkable. As soon as I finished reading the first part - narrated by the hunter - I instantly struggled with the other narration that of the prey. I was swallowed by the horrible circumstances of the poor, their inhumane actions and then a world of Utopia was pulling me towards it!!!! This exactly what makes you feel every damn thing in this book, this shows you that this book is not a work of fiction.
